The error message you got indicates the program wasn't able to find a filter to handle the output of some of the pins while it was building the graph. There is a complex negotiation that happens between output and input pins as Directshow attempts to connect the pins. Each pin may support several different features (different video color depths, audio sampling rates, etc). Each filter performs one function and is connected to the others via a "pin". So what could have been the problem with the 'graphic pin' stuff in my original posting ? Playing a video with Directshow involves building a filter chain.
